Vintage Amazing Spider-Car by Mego 1976-1980

If Spider-Man needs a Spider-Man helicopter, he of course needs an Amazing Spider-Car. Stan Lee was applaud that Mego produced vehicles for Batman and not Spider-Man, but it was only logical that they didn't. Batman actually did have the Batcave, Wayne Foundation Building, Batmobile, Bat-Cycle, and Batcopter in the comics, but Spider-man didn't have a vehicles or a secret lair for that matter. Nevertheless, Mego produced the Amazing Spider-Car for Spidey and at the same time also produced the Captain Americar for Captain America and the Green Arrow car for Green Arrow. Both Captain America's and Green Arrow's vehicles were pulled after one year for low sales, but the Spider-Car was a good seller for several years.

The 1976 Mego product catalog describes Spider-Man's ride as a new weapon for battling foes of justice everywhere. He sees trouble ahead and presto...the secret spidernet pops into place from the rear compartment. It's a catch for the day. The Spidercar is scaled to hold your Spidey figure and take him and you for a long ride into adventureland for exciting playtimes.

Although, I am primarily a Batman kind of guy, there are some pretty cool toys out there for Spidey. This one included. The foe net trap about says it all.

Where are you coming from Spider-Man? Nobody knows who you are. Actually, just between you and me, I think he's Peter Parker.

Vintage Spider-Man Helicopter by Empire 1979

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can. So, why the heck does he need a helicopter for? Because it looks cool. That's why.

In 1979, Empire toys produced the Spider-Man helicopter to go along with Mego's 8 inch figure line. Empire also produced a Spider-Man Van, a Hulk Copter and Hulk Van, and a Bat Copter, which was much cooler than the Mego version. No, Bat Van, however. They probably felt it was too much like Mego's Mobile Bat-Lab. You can see pics of a couple of these bad boys over at Plaid Stallions HERE.

I picked this baby off eBay back in February. I actually received a Spider-Man helicopter for Christmas from my sister back in 1979. I still have the fuselage and tried to restore it, but was never able to get the missing parts. So, I just bought the whole darn thing.

The back story on that, as I have discussed before, is while cleaning out my parents garage years ago, my dad threw out a vast amount of my toys. For some reason, he kept things such as the fuselage, in this case, and threw away the accessories. Accessories like the rotor and landing gear.

I just happened to see this on eBay just before the auction ended. However, I was not home and spotted this baby using my iPhone. I knew I would never win the bid using my phone, so, I called my wife had her bid from our home computer.  My cool, but non-geek wife won the bid and the rest was history.

There are still parts missing such as, the winch, which suspends from the left side of the helicopter. You see the hole where the peg that holds the winch in place would go in the pic above. Plus there was a net and several other pieces of rescue and crime fighting equipment: oxygen tank, shovel, walkie-talkie, axe, pick axe, etc.

This is definitely a cool, however, huge toy that is almost two feet long. Although designed for the Mego 8 inch Spider-Man, I think the 12 inch version fits a lot better. I am very pleased to have this back in my collection. Now, just need to find a complete Empire Bat Copter.

At Last! The First Glimpse of Chris Evan as Captain America

First we caught a glimpse of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and next we get a shot of Chris Evans as The First Avenger: Captain America from Ain't It Cool News. There isn't much to compare other than the two made for TV Captain America movies or the unreleased movie from the 90's, but I think Evans looks great in Cap's red, white,and blue outfit. Looking forward to July 22nd for this one.

Introducing the New Spider-Man

I was so disappointed when the plug was pulled on Spider-Man 4. Spider-Man 3 needed some work, but for the most part the series was well done and I figured Tobey Maguire and gang would redeem themselves in the new movie. Why Sony felt re-booting the series would speed up production, I'll never know.

Well, here it is kids. Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man. Doesn't look as bad as I thought, but time will tell how good the new series is. What do you think?  

Cool Super Hero Birthday Cakes

I will be celebrating my 40th birthday this year and I have been talking to my wife about having one hell of a birthday bash.

My nephew, who is a couple of years younger than me, had a kick ass super hero costume birthday party last year that they called the Super Hero Summit.

I intend to have full blown cosplay party. My wife asked my what I thought we should do for a cake. So I started hunting around for some ideas. Here's what I found.

2 Hot Girls in a Shower: Batman vs. Spiderman

Two hot chicks in a shower answer the question who is the cooler super hero, Batman or Spider-man? I don't think these two even know who the Dark Knight or the Wall Crawler even are, but they give it a good try.



Batman has a trust fund? Batman drives a car plane? Where do hot chicks get this stuff?

Spider-man...Where Are You Coming From Spider-man?

I was always more of an Electric Company kind of kid. Sesame Street just never appealed to me. Sesame Street had some animated shorts with Batman and Robin every once in a blue moon, but Electric Company always had Spider-man.

Remember that 70's style theme song? Gary William Friedman wrote several songs as music director and composer for The Electric Company. He is also the vocalist on the song and recorded under the pseudonym Will Power. If you haven't heard the entire theme before take a listen below.



Mego even promoted to "Read Spidey Comics And Watch him on TV's Electric Company". You can see here the header from my boxed Mego Spider-man.


Spider-man never faced any of his comic villains in these shorts. Instead he faced villains like The Wall or Silly Willy, but it was still cool nevertheless.



Spider-man never talked on Electric Company. In order to get children to read, speech balloons (like in the comics) would pop up so you could read what Spider-man had to say.

Remembering Star Wars Large Size Action Figures

I have never owned any of the large size 12 inch Star Wars figures, but they have always been on my wish list. I guess I just never got around to picking any up or just could never find complete figures without paying an arm and a leg.

I do have some 12 inch figures from Mego though. I have a Superman (the Christopher Reeve version), Magnetic Robin, and Spiderman. I'll get around to posting those eventually.

Reis over Geek Orthodox picked up a sweet 12 inch (sorry 15 inch) Darth Vader at the Emerald City Comic-Con this past week and inspired me to look into starting my large size figure collection.

The 12 inch line from Kenner sadly didn't last long, but here's a look at the commercials I remember seeing while watching cartoons on Saturday morning.

Good Thing for Spiderman Unemployment Benefits Were Extended

If the economy has hit you in the collectible pocket book, you aren't the only one. Peter Parker is out of a job.

In Amazing Spider-man #623, that went on sale today, Peter Parker got a pink slip.

"He's going to struggle with unemployment and trying to save the city while he can barely afford to a keep a roof over his head," said Marvel Senior Editor Steve Wacker.

Is there any good economic news lately? Will this economy ever improve? What's next, Batman goes bankrupt? Now that I think about. I wonder how billionaire Bruce Wayne is doing financially these days?

Mego Action Figures Video From 1973

Fellow Bat-Fan and voice actor, Wally Wingert put this video together from a photo story he did as a kid. The story called "The Biggest Robber Yet" and features the first and second wave of Mego World's Greatest Super Heroes including a "RC" Batman, Robin, Superman, Aquaman, Tarzan, Captain America, Spiderman, and Shazam. Wally did this photo story in 1973 so the action figure line was hot off the presses, but it doesn't look like Wally had a removable mask Robin, which would probably place the time line in the later half of 1973. We also get to hear Wally's voice talent too, as he plays all the characters in the story. Enjoy!
