Cool Super Hero Birthday Cakes

I will be celebrating my 40th birthday this year and I have been talking to my wife about having one hell of a birthday bash.

My nephew, who is a couple of years younger than me, had a kick ass super hero costume birthday party last year that they called the Super Hero Summit.

I intend to have full blown cosplay party. My wife asked my what I thought we should do for a cake. So I started hunting around for some ideas. Here's what I found.

Most of these cakes were done by LovieCakes.com and CakeCentral.com. Let me know which one you like. If you have any ideas or can send a pic feel free to do so.

I wonder what it would cost to have Adam West be guest at the party. Anyone got the number to his agent?

Spider-man...Where Are You Coming From Spider-man?

I was always more of an Electric Company kind of kid. Sesame Street just never appealed to me. Sesame Street had some animated shorts with Batman and Robin every once in a blue moon, but Electric Company always had Spider-man.

Remember that 70's style theme song? Gary William Friedman wrote several songs as music director and composer for The Electric Company. He is also the vocalist on the song and recorded under the pseudonym Will Power. If you haven't heard the entire theme before take a listen below.

Mego even promoted to "Read Spidey Comics And Watch him on TV's Electric Company". You can see here the header from my boxed Mego Spider-man.

Spider-man never faced any of his comic villains in these shorts. Instead he faced villains like The Wall or Silly Willy, but it was still cool nevertheless.

Spider-man never talked on Electric Company. In order to get children to read, speech balloons (like in the comics) would pop up so you could read what Spider-man had to say.

Spider-man, Where are you coming from?
Spider-man, Nobody Knows Who You are
Spider-man, You've got that Spidey Touch
Spider-man, You are a Web-Slinging Star!

Kapow! Superman Comic Book Back on Top

Over 3 million dollars has been spent on comic books over the past month. The thing is that the 3 million only bought 3 comic books.

First a copy of Action Comics #1 sold for a cool million back in February. Not only was this the first comic to reach the million dollar mark, Action Comics #1 was the first appearance of the Man of Steel, Superman.

Just three days later a copy of Detective Comics #27, which was the first appearance of Batman in 1939, sold for just over a million at $1.08 million.

Today Superman packs the old one two again with another issue of Action Comics #1 from 1938 selling for $1.5 million.

ComicConnect.com made both sales of the first appearance of Superman today and the one in February. The Batman comic that sold in February was sold at auction.

Ed Jaster, vice president of Heritage Auctions said, "This puts the hobby in a much greater light. People now have to think of vintage comics with the same kind of respect that they would with American paintings."

Man, I need to make more money.

Batman Folder Picked Up Today on Clearance.

This Batman folder was on clearance at Target for .99 cents and just had to pick it up. I have always loved this style of Batman logo as seen at the top. Probably because it's the one Mego used on it's Batman action figure boxes and blister cards, which was the standard logo for the comics at that time.

The back is solid black with the standard Bat symbol.

The inside had a comic book style layout.

It amazes me how people keep designing new Batman stuff. Bring it on. I am ready for more.

Ever Think of a Re-Imagined Superman #1?

With first issue comic books for both Superman and Batman selling for a million or more recently, why try and fix what isn't broken?

Warren Ellis, who runs art challenges over on his blog, asked artists to re-imagine the classic 1939 cover to Superman #1.

Here are some of the entries:

What do you think? Anyone think they can do the ultimate re-imagine of Superman #1? Or how about Batman #1? If you think you can, send them to us and we'll get them posted.

Good Thing for Spiderman Unemployment Benefits Were Extended

If the economy has hit you in the collectible pocket book, you aren't the only one. Peter Parker is out of a job.

In Amazing Spider-man #623, that went on sale today, Peter Parker got a pink slip.

"He's going to struggle with unemployment and trying to save the city while he can barely afford to a keep a roof over his head," said Marvel Senior Editor Steve Wacker.

Is there any good economic news lately? Will this economy ever improve? What's next, Batman goes bankrupt? Now that I think about. I wonder how billionaire Bruce Wayne is doing financially these days?

Saturday Memories of Shazam!: AKA Captain Marvel

Chosen from among all others by the Immortal Elders - Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, Mercury - Billy Batson and his mentor travel the highways and byways of the land on a never-ending mission: to right wrongs, to develop understanding, and to seek justice for all!"

In time of dire need, young Billy has been granted the power by the Immortals to summon awesome forces at the utterance of a single word:

SHAZAM!

...a word that transforms him in a flash into the mightiest of mortal beings - Captain Marvel!

I loved watching Shazam on CBS back in the 70's. It's fun to watch now, but damn it was cheesy. I don't know what was up the that lightening bolt on the front of that RV, but were they trying to blow their cover?

The show was on for 3 seasons on CBS and later had a cartoon version in 1981 on NBC. The Cartoon version was a more accurate to the comics and had the whole Marvel family: Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr., and Uncle Marvel.

The cartoon had the same producers and the intro was somewhat similar to the live version and the show used a lot of the same soundtrack.

Here is a look at my boxed Shazam from Mego's World's Greatest Super Heroes Collection.

Mego definitely pushed this character in the line when the show debuted and even plugged the TV series in their toy commercial. I have to laugh at the telephone cord representing a lightening bolt (at least I think it is supposed to be a lightening bolt). Shazam was a last minute entry in the 2 nd wave of figures. Spiderman, Captain America, and Tarzan were planned from the beginning with Captain Marvel a last minute add.

Also, on a side note I didn't know Mr. Fantastic had the powers of invisibility. It kind of looks more like the power of teleportation than invisibility for him and the Invisible Girl.

I wonder why Mego didn't give hime the proper white cape? Anybody know what's up with the Shazam movie starring The Rock as Black Adam?

Kapow! Batman Kicks Superman's Ass.

From Annalyn Censky at CNNMoney: Batman comic book beats Superman at Auction, sets record.

The Dark Knight may be Superman's next greatest nemesis, after Lex Luthor.

Just three days after auction site ComicConnect.com claimed to break world records when it sold an original Superman comic for $1 million, Batman stole his thunder.

A rare, high-quality copy of Detective Comics #27, which marked the first appearance of Batman in 1939, sold for $1,075,000 on Thursday. Heritage Auctions of Dallas sold the comic book to an unnamed bidder on behalf of an anonymous collector.

According to MSNBC, the 1939 comic that contained Batman's debut topped Superman's selling price by $75,500. According to Greg Rohan, president of Heritage, "The buyer wanted to be extremely anonymous, but I can say he's a very serious comic book collector and has been since childhood."

OK. I admit it was me who bought it. As if. Man I really need to make more money if I ever want to own these someday. How about you? Would anyone shell out this kind of dough if they had the money to pay these kind of prices?

What Are the Most Valuable Comic Books?

As comic book lovers well know an original Action Comics #1 went for a cool million earlier this week. So if the first appearance of Superman is the most valuable comic book in the world, what would the runners up be?

The Telegraph has come up with a list to answer that question. This is what they estimate the top 10 comic would be worth in mint condition.

1. Action Comic #1 - $1,390,000
2. Detective Comics #27- $1,380,000
3. Superman #1 - $671,000
4. All-American Comics #16 - $430,000
5. Detective Comics #1 - $405,000
6. Marvel Comics #1 - $367,000
7. Batman #1 - $359,000
8. More Fun Comics #52 - 316,000
9. Flash Comics #1 - $289,000
10. Amazing Fantasy #15 - $280,000

Only two out of a 100 known surviving copies of Action Comics #1 are graded as Very Fine or better, which means odds are that mint copies will never be found.

Man if I only had 5 million or so. I guess I could always just jump in my Delorean and go pick up a few mint copies.

Action Comics #1 Sells For $1 Million

From Annalyn Censky at CNNMoney: It's a bird, it's a plane...it's a $1 million comic book

Since he started selling comic books at age 16, Vincent Zurzolo had only dreamt of selling a million-dollar comic book.

Monday was his lucky day. That was the day that Superman hit the jackpot.

"It is the single most important event in comic book history," said Zurzolo, who c0-owns auction site ComicConnect.com with founder Stephen Fishler.

The first comic book featuring the Man of Steel was a 1938 issue of Action Comics number one.

Most comic book or Super Hero fans would know the cover anywhere. It features Superman lifting a car on the cover and originally sold for 10 cents.

"When you look at what happened to real estate, the stock market and in banking, people are terrified. They're making no money in the banks, they're not sure about real estate, and the stock market is like playing roulette," Zurzolo said. "With comic books, they feel a lot more confident."

The copy is reportedly in better condition then its predecessor that sold for $317,000 last year.

"Now we've hit a point where you can lump us in with fine art," Zurzolo added.

Holy price tag!

Smallville: Absolute Justice Was Full of Geek Greatness!

I can't help but think what a great job Geoff Johns did writing Smallville's most recent two episodes. It was absolutely full of Easter Eggs.

Everything from references to the Super friends, the troubalert, the Golden Age to the Silver Age (terms used to designate the change of Super Hero costumes and back stories) Golden Age events generally took place from the late 30's to late 40's and the Golden Age is a reference from 1956 to 1970.

Something else I thought was a nice touch was the addition of the original Red Tornado, Abigail Hunkel, was genius (although I did not know that there was a Golden Age version of the character until now). You can see a photo of the character below.

The character was actually very popular back in her day and was in the first adventure of the Justice Society of America, having a cameo and attempting to apply for membership into the JSA. Although she split her pants and she had to leave before completing her application the JSA made her an honorary member.

I would love to see more episodes like this, but I know budget restraints prevent that from happening. Also, the show is primarily about Superman, not the Justice League.

So what did everyone else think? Did you like the episodes? Let's hear from you.

I miss Battlestar Galactica

I never collected any toys that were Battlestar Galactica related, but I did love both versions of the show. I am also looking forward to the new series Caprica. Named after the planet that the Galactica was originally built to represent. I enjoyed the pilot and thought it was neat to see the creation of the Cylons.

For the third season premiere of BSG I had the pleasure of meeting several other BSG Fans at the third season Premier Frak Party hosted by Matt Campagna and Nat Tubanos of Your Geek News and BSG Cast fame.

Matt and Nat put on good time with a weekend full of fun. There were even cast members from the show there. It was a great time and hopefully Matt and Nat will one day do a Caprica Frak Party. Anyway I thought I would share some pics from the first Frak Party.

Hera I am Luciana Carro, who played Kat on the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series. She was a sweetheart. She hung out the whole weekend with us and even went to dinner with a group of us. Class act all the way.

Here I am with Mat and Nat. If you haven't seen their sites BSGCast.com and YourGeekNews.com, check them out. They do movie reviews and news at Your Geek News and episode reviews of Battlestar Galactica (soon to be Caprica reviews) at BSGCast. They did a great job hosting the party. They did another Frak Party for the series finale, but was held in L.A., while the first party was held in my hometown of Las Vegas, I wasn't able to get out of town for the second. If only it had been a week later.

Luciana with Rudy Jahchan from Galacticast.com. Yes, those are pantie's on Luciana's head. Wouldn't you like to know what's up with that.

Group shot of Mat and Nat, Kevin Grazier (who was the scientific advisor for the show), Ryan Keeton author of Battlestar Prometheus and his wife, and Luciana.

Fans of TV series, Movies, comic books, Batman, Star wars, Battlestar Galactica or whatever are always great. People call us Geeks, but really we're the coolest people you'll ever know.

Descending to the Batcave William Shakespeare Style

Different strorylines from comics, movies, and TV shows have shown Batman accessing the Batcave a variety of ways. Usually Bruce Wayne would enter the Batcave from a hidden door in Wayne Manor's study.

For years in the comics Bruce would enter behind a non functioning grandfather clock by moving the hands of the clock to 10:47, which is the time Martha and Thomas Wayne were murdered. The clock would open revealing a descending staircase leading down to the Batcave.

In Batman Returns, Bruce would would switch the lights on in an ornament in an aquarium and then drop through the floor via an iron maiden.

In Batman Forever, he fell through a trap door in is office at Wayne Foundation into capsule that would transport him at 200 mph to the Batcave.

In Batman Begins, playing three keys on a piano opened a secret panel leading to an elevator originally built for the underground railroad.

Of all the ways the Caped Crusader and at times Robin accessed the Batcave, the secret switch hidden in the bust of William Shakespeare is my favorite. After receiving an urgent call from Commissioner Gordon, Bruce or Dick would pull back the head of the bust of William Shakespeare, perched a top Bruce's desk, and turn a switch. The bookcase on the back wall would then retract into the wall to reveal a pair of labeled fire poles, referred to as the batpoles, and potentially revealing the millionaire and his ward's secret identity with words "Access to Batcave via batpoles" printed on the back wall. Their names clearly identified their corresponding pole. On the way down the poles Bruce would pull down on a lever that would change them from their civilian clothes to their crime fighting gear. In the 1966 movie the lever was marked "Instant Costume Change Lever". But episodes of the TV series never revealed this. Although, in the episode "Shoot a Crooked Arrow", Bruce did pull a lever labeled "Negate Bruce's Change", leaving him in his civilian clothes.

I would have killed to have this prop when I was a kid..better late than never. This reproduction of the William Shakespeare bust was originally made for the TV reunion movie "Return to the Batcave". It is one of my favorite pieces...To the batpoles!
