League of Extraordinary Bloggers: Comic Books

We interrupt our regularly scheduled 31 Days to a Better Toy Collection to present this weeks assignment from the League on Comic Books.

Comics, Stormtroopers, and Spider-Man, oh, my!

May 4, 2013 once again celebrated Free Comic Book Day, but also coincided with what Star Wars fans refer to as May the Force be with You Day.

I had hoped to be able to venture out with my fellow 501 st Legionnaires, but my Stormtrooper armor is still going under some fine tweaking, which I am told I will have the most screen accurate armor of any member in town, so hopefully it will be worth the wait.

I brought my daughter with me to the days event, which I began doing last year in hopes that it would become an annual tradition for her and I. We'll see if that continues, but we had so much fun and I'll take what I get as long as it lasts.

We visited MaximuM Comics, which is one of our local comic book stores, and has three successful stores in town. The store was packed and based on pics I have seen from stores 1 & 2 they were just as line out the door busy.

I have never shared my comic collection here at the Batcave Toy Room, but I do have a fairly decent collection, mainly consisting of Batman and Detective Comics of course, along with an almost complete set of original series run of Star Wars comics.

My Batman and Detective Comic collection really began to take shape in the early 80's when DC Comics began intertwining stories between the two titles. Basically, the story would start in an issue of Batman and then continue in the next issue of Detective Comics. So, if you missed an issue of either one, you would miss a part of the story. I think it was a pretty good sales tactic on DC's part.

I have fond childhood memories of my Dad taking me to 7-Eleven for slurpees and comic books. A reminder that such a simple act can bring happiness to a child and still be remembered years later.

Although there wasn't free comic books being handed out back in my day, when my Dad took me for the latest issue of Batman or whatever cool cover would catch my eye at the time, but I hope to start a tradition with my daughter.  Maybe not to be a lover of comics, but to have a passion to read and use our imaginations, which is what Free Comic Day is about.

  1. What in the heck IS that comic book store? Man! It is like nerd heaven! Mine back in Atlanta was a dingy dark basement that smelled like feet.

    1. That's MaximuM Comics. Jay, the owner, is a genius and has 3 of the cleaniest and most organized comic book stores I have ever seen. Does events all the time like free movie night at a major theatre once a month as well as, parties and raffle drawings and other fun stuff. It's really cool.

  3. Maximum Comics 3.0 is about 1/2 mile from my house. Love going there. Jay, Lucy, Alex... the whole bunch are a great bunch of people. And yes, it is the cleanest and most organized store I've been to. And it is like the TARDIS, so much bigger on the inside.
