Completing A Death Star Space Station Playset On Schedule

It only took about five and a half years to complete, but at least it's done.

The Vintage Kenner Death Star Space Station, an armored space station playset with enough playability to last for hours or several decades for that matter. This playset rocks.

In my opinion this playset is one of the original Star Wars toys Kenner got right. Mego created a similar playset for its WGSH line with its Batman's Wayne Foundation, which was huge, but Kenner's Death Star Space Station covered just about all the bases from the movie and on a smaller scale.

It has been well documented that I never owned this playset when the original set was produced. Jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon after The Empire Strikes Back release date, Kenner discontinued the playset before I had the chance to get one.

My Death Star was built from junk lots and a few reproduction parts. The swing rope, decals, and trash compactor foam are all repos, but the rest is all original. The decals were purchased off eBay, the swing rope is from Repo Parts , and the trash compactor foam was from Chicago Toy Collector.

I was hoping to use the PDF instructions for this playset from 12 Back, but there wasn't a page for the decal application. So, I attempted to wing it, but still don't know where they all go.

Check out Another Star Wars Blog's take on this playset.

Day 26 of my 31 Days to a Better Toy Collection Challenge definitely felt like a big accomplish to put the finishing touches on this baby.

Anyone want to come over and play? I get dibs on Grand Moff Tarkin. Oh, wait. Kenner didn't make one during the original run of Star Wars figures. Cool ass playset, but left out the brains of the outfit. Go figure. You'd think Kenner should have been named Mattel with that logic.

    1. Thanks Mike. Like I say, Geek minds think a like.

It's a deal. Plenty of different versions of Luke to choose from. Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues) is my favorite.

  4. Nice ... Mine still has all of its stickers... ( I think the "instruction sheet" is still around here somewhere) Does yours still have the "Trash Monster" (Dia Noga) figure....??

    1. That's cool Doc. I have all the stickers, I just don't know where they all go and the instructions don't seem to have an application guide. Do you have anything that shows where they are meant to be placed? I do have the trash monster. Should have took a pic of it and probably should add one.

  5. A friend had this when we were kids. I traded him something for the Compactor monster because I thought it was so cool (thanks to this set we got to see what the whole creature looked like!)

    1. Yes, it definitely gave us some concept to its appearance. However, so did Kenner's Blue Snaggletooth. I think Kenner had put its own spin on the Dianoga, but I think their creation is now part of Star Wars lore.

  6. That Death Star looks great John. Glad to see that Repro Foam going to good use (you actually bought it from me on eBay!). I recently replaced the foam in my Chewbacca Bandolier strap too, and I've been meaning to post a tutorial of that one.

    Great site!

  7. Thanks Dan. The Repro Foam is awesome and dead on. It was exactly what I needed to complete my Death Star playset. I am so glad I found you're site. Keep up the great work.
