This Just In: Vintage Kenner Imperial Stormtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear) 1980

I recently picked up this Imperial Snowtrooper off eBay. It's not on my list of 10 Star Wars toys I want in my collection, but I did want to have a carded version to be seen in my collection. It even came in a protective star case.

I received my first Imperial Stormtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear) for my tenth birthday and it was an intricate part of the beginning of my Star Wars collection.  It came from my Aunt Theresa, who was a big contributor to my toy obsession, taking me on shopping sprees to Toys R US. Gosh, I miss those days, but that day I might as well have been on a toy shopping spree, a Star Wars shopping spree.

My aunt had asked me what I wanted for my birthday that year, which I think she thought I would want something in the Batman realm, which was the norm, but I remember asking for Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues) and a Princess Leia (Bespin Gown) or maybe a Tauntaun. However, what came was beyond what I thought I would receive.

What came was not only the Hoth Battle Gear Stormtrooper, but 6 other Star Wars action figures including: the Luke and Leia I had asked her for, but  Luke Skywalker, Luke Skywalker (X-Wing Pilot), Han Solo, and Bespin Security Guard. I was as excited as a cadet on his first orbit.

I became immediately enthralled with the Stormtrooper in his ice planet gear. I don't know what is about the the figure. Was it the cool armor, the Tri-Pod Laser Cannon they tried to take out the Millennium Falcon with, or that stylish cape they wear? Whatever the case, looking at this action figure takes me back to my first decade of my life and how it shaped my interest decades later.

I of course have a loose version, but I also have a cool tri-logo Return of the Jedi version as well.

What the heck was that cape for anyway?

  2. He's a great rendition...my favorite imp next to the scout...it was a great day when my replacement vinyl cape came for him and he finally was "complete"!

    1. Yep, he's not complete without his cape. It used to drive me nuts when I was a kid and would lose his cape somewhere. You've inspired me to do I Biker Scout post. Stay tuned.

  3. Ha! That cape was for keeping his butt warm I guess.

    1. I've thought of that before. Or maybe it was detachable and could be worn as a shawl or something. ;-)
