League of Extraordinary Bloggers: Hate Leads to Suffering

When I first read this weeks assignment I thought this would be a piece of cake, I've got this, but for the life of me I can't think of one piece of pop culture that I hate. I might have disliked some things, but hate? Like Brian said in the assignment post, hate is a strong word.

Cal, from Calvin's Canadian Cave Cool, originated this weeks topic and discusses his hate of the Banana Splits. I remember liking the Splits as a kid, but I haven't seen a single episode in over thirty years. However, after watching the clip Cal posted my first thought was, WTH?! Any moron could write that silliness.

So, instead of writing about something I hate I thought I would take a different approach. Being a Jedi I am not allowed to hate. Or show anger or fear for that matter, but I thought I would discuss the origins of hate and hate begins with fear. As master Yoda would say, "Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to Hate. Hate leads to suffering.

Oh, who the heck am I kidding. I hate the Super Friends. Well, not really. I watched them religiously, but after Eric, from Toyriffic, did his hate post on G. I. Joe I realized he was right (Damn! He is always right) I had the epiphany that I had similar issues with the Super Friends.

My beef with the Hanna Barbara Justice League classic is that they had lame ass villains. They finally got it right with the Challenge of the Super Friends version, but it only lasted one season. In the Challenge version there was at least one comic book based villain for every hero. Not some dumb ass scientist or idiotic non original alien.

Eventually, we did get a few episodes with Lex Luthor, Mxyzyptlk, Gentleman Jim Craddock, The Joker, Mirror Master, and others, but the show mainly consisted of made up anti-heroes.

Another peeve I have is with the production artist. I mean, who doesn't know that Batman's insignia has a black bat with yellow oval shape behind it? Not the other way around. Same goes for Robin's insignia that was often inked in reverse. A similar issue was often seen on The New Adventures Batman, which could spark another conversation of hating.

Incidentally, The Joker and Catwoman were supposed to be part of Legion of Doom, but the New Adventures of Batman was in production at the same time and DC would not let both shows have rights to the same villains. At the same time the Scarecrow and The Riddler would have probably been seen in the Batman cartoon series.

Actually, The Riddler can be seen in the opening credits of the Batman series, with a pink leotard no less, but never appeared in a single episode. They must have had the art for the opening credits completed before they found out they couldn't include him and just changed the color for copyright purposes.

Anyway, that's my love hate pop culture upset. Anyone else feel the same?

  1. You make some great points and I agree with you 100%

Actually, I stopped reading after I read that I am always right. I figure anyone with that level of awareness on how the universe works must also be right the rest of the time too. ;)

  2. The Superfriends don't really hold up today. I was all excited when our retro cartoon station starting showing it with HE-MAN. I was embarassed to watch it although I did like it as a kid. Thank the gods Bruce Timm and Paul Dini fixed those problems in the 90s with their Batman, Superman, and Justice League cartoons. Kids don't know how great they have it in this golden age.

    1. Every now again there is someone who gets it, which I am constantly blown awy that none of the gang in our little band is involved in the process, wheteher it's toys, films, or TV series. We would rule our genres world.
