Finally, A Toy Display I Can Live With

I get lots of requests to see full shots of The Batcave Toy Room and I've held back on it because I've never liked the way my toys and collectibles were displayed. However, lately I have had lots of inspiration and after getting tips from collectors like Brian Adams from Cool and Collected, I have finally been able to arrange my toy collection in a fashion I am happy with.

My original plan for the toy room was to have wall to wall slat boards and display shelves. I wanted it to have a retail feel. I loved going to the toy sections of department stores like JC Penney's, Sears and Kmart almost as much as getting a new toy. I guess as a kid the anticipation of possibly getting a new toy is the equivalent of winning an auction on eBay today.

I removed the shelving unit from the poster wall and replaced it with a cubby storage unit. I figured I could store loose toys, carded figures, comic books or other items. You can see my nearly completed Death Star playset on top. It's amazing it was completely built out parts from various junk lots I bought to restore other toys.  Also, you can see the oldest Star Wars toy in my collection, my fully restored Millennium Falcon.

To still give the display somewhat of a retail feel, I matched up boxes that were the same shape and size. The Hoth Ice Planet Adventure Set and Rebel Command Center Adventure Set fit together perfectly, wouldn't you say? I see a Rebel Transport in that free space.

For loose items, I chose to put slimmer boxed items towards the back of the shelves and put the loose items in front. Thus allowing boxed items and loose items to be enjoyed at the same time.

Here's another example of that with my Cloud City Playset as a center piece. The shelves still have plenty of room for loose toys that I still need to add. I believe my X-Wing Fighter will fit on this shelf perfectly.

For the top shelves I matched up boxes to fit together like a puzzle. Using the majority of my larger boxes up top. I've seen many collectors do this as well and I like it.

I started to hang up my carded Star Wars action figures as well. I won't be able to hang all of my carded figures, but the hard part right now is deciding which ones to put up. I am going to break it up  to about 12 from each movie. But it's hard to pick favorites. What are some of your favorites?

I still have a little less than half of a wall of room left. With space underneath the first row for about another 12 action figures. I'll be putting more up as soon as I get more star cases in.

Well, that's it for now gang. More to come soon. By the way, I many items from my list of 10 Star Wars toys that I want to add to my collection did you see?

  2. Jeesh John, you're making me want to rearrange my collection now. ;)

Your room is looking great! And I see you found a spot front and center for the newly acquired blue Snaggletooth. Awesome!

    1. Thanks Brian. That's interesting as you helped inspire this arrangement. Your discussions on rotating and displaying your collectibles was a big help to me. Good eye by the way. I don't know why I didn't have the Cantina Adventure Set on my want list, but I need to add it and move my Blue Snaggletooth and friends over to it.

  3. That display looks great. Lots of visual impact. It's hard to choose what to showcase and what to just stack and you did a great job without overdoing it. You inspired me to do some changes with my own dispaly, which of course I will illustrate.

    1. Thanks Cal. I really worked on giving everything a good balance and give it an organized look. It was just to cluttered to me before. Glad I could help. Can't wait to see what you come up with your collection. BTW, you should be receiving your prize any time now, if you haven't already.
