Welcome to the Batcave Toy Room!
I have been a Batman Fan for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory is of my Dad bringing home my first Mego Worlds Greatest Super-Heroes removable cowl Batman action figure back in 1973.
I watched the 1966 Batman TV series religiously when my family lived in Chicago. I was devastated to learn when we moved to Las Vegas that Batman did not air on any of the stations. I didn't understand why the same shows didn't air in different cities. I did have some relief however, when the 1966 movie would air from time to time. I would watch it without fail.
When Star Wars came out I of course, just like every other kid in America and in the world for that matter, just loved it. Although, the movie was the greatest thing I had ever seen my interest in Batman did not falter. Most of my other friends had Star Wars toys and I did enjoy playing with their toys, but had not been hooked as I had been with batman toys. But when the Empire Strikes Back came out that was a different story.
A few months after the Empire Strikes Back came out I had attended my friend David's birthday party. He had received a good chunk of the latest ESB toys from Kenner for gifts. At that moment in time a was hooked. With my birthday being only a couple of weeks after his, Star Wars had become a priority.
For my tenth birthday my parents had bought me Han Solo's famous starship...The Millennium Falcon. Other friends and family bought me a slew of action figures. Luke Skywalker, Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues), Luke Skywalker (X-Wing Pilot), Han Solo, Han Solo (Hoth Gear), C-3PO, Snaggletooth, Lando Calrisian, Stormtrooper (Hoth battle gear), Princess Leia (Bespin Gown), and Bespin Security. I remember it like yesterday...my Star Wars toy collection was born.
Batman was still in my heart, but was second place to Star Wars. Return of the Jedi was released and the fire continued. But after living in Las Vegas for nine years a local station finally started broadcasting the Batman TV series in 1984. Man it was great. Friends who watched the series when they lived back east were in front of the TV set just like me to relive their favorite show we hadn't seen in years.
Since we were just beginning the early years of our teens we watched the series on a whole new level. The adult level of show had quickly become obvious with us. We had loved the show just as we had loved it as kids. Only now he had a whole new appreciation for the show.
With all the new Batman movies and the release of the new trilogy of Star Wars films I have grown to merge the two mediums and love each equally as much. A recent Google rendition with DC Super Heroes built into the name inspired me to share my passion and my collection of Batman, Star Wars, and everything else Sci-Fi. So join me frequently in the Batcave and share your childhood memories of these beloved characters. To the Batpoles!
